I'm trying to access Windows Explorer. "Help" tells me to click on
Start > All Programs >Accessories > Windows Explorer - but it's nor
there! How do I get it back?
There are 10 items in Accessories (but not W/E) whereas another
computer I have here (same Windows XP build) has 15 items (including
W/E). Why the difference? How do I restore it to my first machine?
All replies appreciated.
TIA.
What you see as a logged in user in your Accessories folder come from
two other folders. Windows starts here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs
\Accessories
When you create a user and add programs later, they are in similar
folder that belongs to the user, like:
C:\Documents and Settings\< USER NAME >\Start Menu\Programs
\Accessories
When you login, you will be presented a combination of the shortcuts
in both with no duplicates because you are an All User and you are
you.
If you do not see it in your Accessories, it is somehow missing from
one of those folers, but you can create the shortcut in either folder
depending on what you want any future new users to see. Generally, it
goes in the users folder.
Browse to the folder, right click, create a New Shortcut, and in the
location enter this:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, C:\
That is the default setting and if your boot drive is not C, change
the shortcut.
Click Next and Name it whatever you want - Windows Explorer sounds
good.
You can change the icon through Properties, etc. so it looks the way
you want Look at the Properties on the system you like and make your
new shortcut look like that one.
This is how it should be working and you have now fixed the problem
instead of working around the problem using some other method.
You can put a copy of the shortcut (or any shortcut) down in your
Quick Launch area to the right of your Start button so Windows
Explorer is always just one click away instead of having to go through
all those menus.
