problem with windows explorer, everytime I attempt to
work in windows explorer, I get defaulted back to
desktop. Are there any resolutions to this problem?

Sounds like your windows xp shell is corrupted. Go to My
Computer, Select your hard drive (usally c) right click
properties,select tools, select check now, check
automatically fix system errors.
