Explorer and the registry

Something has happened to one or more of the keys related to the operation of
Explorer in my registry.

If I click on Explorer from the Start menu, the Explorer window opens
properly. The window has two panel. The directory tree under MyComputer shows
on the left side of the Explorer window that opens and the folders within the
default folder in the directory tree show on the right. All normal.,

If I click on a folder in the directory tree on the left side, it opens on
the right side to show all the directories and files contained in the folder.
Again, all normal.

Bad things happen when I click on a folder in the right hand window. Instead
of the folder opening normally, the Windows Search Window opens.

How can I fix this? I think the problem is that a default value in one of
the registry keys that condition the operation of Explorer has changed.

Where can I find out how Explorer is programmed in the gegistary.

What has you zoning in on the 'registry' as the culprit? In other words -
what prompts you to jump to the registry having been changed and thus - the
cause of your problem? Did you install/utilize something that
cleans/modifies the registry lately? Did you implement a change? Install
some software to modify how things look/work?

Anyway...

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

For example, a search for:
click on folder and search opens
http://www.google.com/search?q=click+on+folder+and+search+opens

One of the first hits:

Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321186

May be exactly what you need.

Another option you might try:
Click the Start button --> select Run --> type
REGSVR32 /i SHELL32
--> Click OK.

If that doesn't do it...
Search or CMD Opens When Double Clicking a Folder or Drive ( Line 18 - right
side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Good luck!
