Windows Explorer Problems

When i invoke Windiows explorer (My Computer) it works just fine the first
time. When I invoke it the second time i get the message "Windows Explorer
encountered a problem and needs to Close". From that screen I have sent
error reports. Also from that screen when i use the "debug" key, it works
fine the next time i invoke Windows Explorer again. Howver, tHe second time
after "debugging" I get the same problem screen. Getting tired of Debugging
svery second time. Any suggestions.

Also, I realize I may have to reinstall Windows Explorer. There seems to be
no instructions out there on the web to do this. Any suggestions? I have my
original Xp CD if necessary but that does not give you the option of loading
that one piece of software.

Depending on your machine's memory total, you might benefit from
an Explorer option. Open Explorer, Click Tools, Folder, Options,
View - scroll till you find a sub-option "Launch Folder Windows in
a separate process". Click the check box, Logout and back in and
retry the operations that trigger the explorer fault.

A month or two ago someone reported that he had the "every other time"
Windows Explorer bug. You might even be the same person, but if not
then try some google groups advanced searches for this newsgroup and
see if he did stumble onto a solution. I don't remember seeing that
he ever got a solution to this, like almost all other Windows Explorer
bugs reported here.

If it happens exactly every second time and I were still in the software
business then I'd look for something that would take a snapshot of the
registry between a pair of starts and see how few changes I could get.
That seems like a perfect way to try to find what is changing between
the good and bad runs, or excluding the registry as a culprit.

I hope it works out for you.

Have you looked in Event Viewer for the error report? What is the Event
ID, Source and Details?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can make it harder to search for information about the
error message. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the
error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are
important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and paste the Error Report into an email, send it to
yourself and print off the copy in your Inbox or your Sent Items
folder.

Hope this helps.
