Windows Explorer locks desktop

I have a really annoying problem.
If I am using Windows Explorer or My Computer, I can do everything like move
files copy files etc as normal, but when I close the last window that's open
the desktop hangs. Moving the mouse around doesn't bring up the taskbar
(which I have set to hidden) and I can't click on anything on the desktop.
If I have an application that's open I can use ALT TAB to switch between
applications and I can use them as if nothing is wrong.
CTRL ALT DEL allows me to restart.
The workaround is to keep a window open and minnimised but I would would
like to fix this.
I've trying restarting which works for a little while but after about 10
minutes I get the same problem.
I am using NAV and Windows Malicious and Defender software but nothing is
coming up, no viruses no nothing.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

you could have a problem with 911562. Check KB918165.

I wish someone would answer this, I'm having a similar problem with XP,
taskbar freezes - everything on taskbar, start button, clock, program
switching - locks up for about 5 minutes then regains it's senses.

ALT TAB works, all programs are fine just can't use the stinking taskbar.
