Windows Explorer issue

XPSP2 - 80GB HP R3479EA Laptop - with 10GB freespace....

When I access Windows Explorer - My Pictures, I see large Icons, the program
then stops and I get the following errors in the error report that is sent to
Microsoft

EventType : InPageError P1 : c000009c P2 : 00000003
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb767.dir00\explorer.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb767.dir00\appcompat.txt

any ideas how to fix Explorer / My Pictures so it works properly again?

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting module
gdiplus.dll, version 5.1.3102.3352, fault address 0x00143023.

I also have problems with Windows Messenger

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Windows Live Messenger )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see
Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
msnmsgr.exe, 8.5.1302.1018, 4717a53b, unknown, 0.0.0.0, 00000000, 0, 0d000000.

Which may or may not be related.

I've tried a disk check which despite having 10GB free disk space fails
saying there's insufficient space to complete.

1- gdiplus.dll is GDI graphics interface.
What your Mobo model and manufacturer
Do you have ATI Radeon or Nvidia Card?

Download Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI

Reboot your machine after the installation of the update twice!
Then run a through scan by doing the earlier cleaning steps and run this toll:
download this tool o run clean up:

Run Disk Clean Up on your Drive, does it help?

If the above didn't help then try this:
Open your Search and search for gdiplus.dll, you will find it in this
location:
C:\Windows\System3
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.2600.2180_x-ww_522f9f82

Windows Explorer may exit unexpectedly when you use it to view TIFF files in
the Details view in Windows Server 2003

2- To your second issue:
Uninstall windows live messenger and then reinstall it again.

Can you please provide a copy of the Stop error (BSOD) Report

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Please post the copy of the Event Viewer Error report relating to the
above.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Sounds like you have a bad file in your "My Pictures" folder.

You could move all the files to another folder and then move
a file back, one a time until you find the bad file (using a
command window). When found, delete it.

As for the Messenger error, it doesn't look like an error. It
looks like the Event Viewer is attempting to display an
information message, but it is missing information that
msnmsgr.exe does not contain. Therefore, the error is that
the Event Viewer cannot display any info about a
msnmsgr.exe event. Make sense?

Some more information.....

I've been working on this today.....

1. I've successfully zipped up My Pictures and can view all of them when
double clicked within the zipped file.

2. I've also deleted ALL of the thumbs.db files within the zipped files.

3. The original My Pictures file deleted satisfactorily to the Recycle Bin
and then the Recycle Bin has been emptied.

4. I can decompress .bmp, .gif and .png files and place them into a new My
Pictures folder and it behaves normally.

HOWEVER if I try and insert ANY .jpg picture into My Pictures it falls over
immediately, it would appear that somehow the registration of Jpegs has
screwed up.

Any further thoughts please?

The versions referenced in your Event Viewer error are not the latest
available.

You do not seem to have update to SP3? Explorer.exe is now
6.00.2900.5512 - 6.00.2900.3156 is an earlier Hotfix. The latest version
of
gdiplus.dll is 5.1.3102.5581, which came with KB 938828 whereas you have
5.1.3102.3352.

You also seem to be still using Internet Explorer 6.

1. Thanks for your help, I don't like IE7, So I reverted to IE6.
2. The error occurs regardless of association I have a number of image
programmes
Adobe Photoshop Viewer
Paint
Microsoft Office Photo Manager
Apple Image Viewer
Windows Image Viewer
I've tried each of these in turn with the same result.
3. I'll pull all my data off tomorrow to a portable drive - It'll be secure
then.
4. I'll then run SP3 into this machine and se what happens then.

I tend to follow single chains of recommendation prior to going onto other
activities, your suggestion is useful and will be used if this chain fails.

re the MSN issue ..
