Windows Explorer is defaulting to Search

I've recently encountered an irritating problem with Windows Explorer,
whenever I open up for example 'My Documents' the view is normal but if I
then click on one of the folders to display the contents the search window
opens.

I can prevent this from happening by clicking on the Folders button and then
making sure that I only select items in the left hand window but if I click
on a folder in the right pane the search window opens again.

This is particularly irritating as I have shortcuts on my desktop to folders
which I use regularly and these open straight up into the search window
thereby rendering the shortcut as effectively useless.

I have tried using Tools/Options etc but without success. First noticed the
problem about a month ago shortly after installing an update but can't be
sure that the two things are connected.

Any help would be much appreciated.

credit to MVP Alex Nichol:

Start the Registry Editor by going to Start>Run and typing "regedit"
without the quotes.

Navigate to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell and in the right pane double click on
(Default) and enter the explicit four characters "none" without the
quotes.

Repeat at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

Be careful with the Registry Editor.

Thanks Guys

Being lazy I used the Kellys-corner solution and it worked first time.

Keep up the good work.
