Windows Explorer has Stopped Working

I have just purchased Vista Ulimate (1/31/7) at Sam's Club. The install went
very well. The overall experience is great, with the exception of copying
files. When I try to copy a file, I get "Windows Explorer has Stopped
Working" followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting.

So, I am unable to move/copy files. If I cannot find a solution quickly, I
will be forced to roll back to XP.

out with the explorer is not working and restarting - 5 hours no help from
tech support.

Well, I did some more digging and found a utility called shellexview which
allows you to see all the explorer add ins and easily disable them. So I
disabled all non MS ones and things worked great. I then slowly started
turning them on and repeating my steps and found that Tortoise SVN was the
cause of the problem. I went to their site and sure enough, there was a fix
for this very issue. Things have been working great now, other than other
application specific compatibility issues which I expected, but so far so
good.

I have the same problems. I tried restarting in safe mode and system
restore, as well as did the Tortoise SVN update. Neither worked. Brand new
computer with Vista already installed. Worked for 1 day before this problem
started. Any other ideas?

If it's a new computer bundled with Vista talk to the tech support for the
computer.

Liz, try the "nightly build" download for SVN. Actually as of right now, the
last stable release of tortoise has this problem resolved.

I have an AMD Athlon 3800 64x2 processpr and it will only let me install the
32 bit svn. Is this right?

That depends on which version of vista you installed, did you install the 32
bit or 64 bit?

I just bought my computer with Vista installed already. How can I tell which
version it has? It is a HP a1700n.

Also, I nevertheless tried the 32 bit nightly build for SVN and no luck.

It is the 32 bit version. Is that OK, given I do have a 64 processor? Does
it really matter?

This doesn't tell you if it is 32 or 64 bit....It just tells you which
version of Windows you are running. At least that is all I got from it! I
too am trying to find out if I'm in 32 or 64 bit as I need to know for
driver updates

Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System. There it will tell you whether
your OS is 32 bit or 64 bit.

How can you not know what processor you're running?

The 32 bit version (x86) of Vista will run fine on an x64 processor. An x64
version will not run on a 32 bit processor.
Most 32 bit software runs fine. Unless HP offers x64 drivers for the
computer and all the hardware, stick with 32 bit for now.

Initially I did an upgrade (yep I know that is not he best idea) and got the
loop windows explorer has stopped working followed by windows is searching
for a solution followed by windows explorer is restarting. It was in the
crash loop constantly even in safe mode. I tried doing the upgrade twice with
the same result. Tech support was no help either.

I then decided to do a clean install. This seemed to fixed the problem.
However I just starting getting the error again whenever I tried to move or
copy files. I was suddenly not able to do any file movements without causing
the error again - this time at least without the loop.

Turns out I had just installed java runtime 1_5_0_11 so I uninstalled that
program and everything seems to work again. Holding my breath.....

Folks,

This expensive pile of junk called Vista Ultimate is driving me (and
several other people judging by messages around the Internet) up the wall.
Miscrosoft, as per normal, just seem to be sitting on their fat collective
arses doing Sweet Fanny Adams to help solve the problem.

I have tried the solutions mentioned by other people in this thread but
unfortunately, no joy. Does anyone know if there has been any progress on
this problem of being unable to copy / cut and paste files and folders
without seeing the "Windows Explorer has stopped working......."?

Hello,

Your post is at once poignant and amusing. In a nutshell, Internet Explorer
SUCKS, go with Mozilla Firefox. Really. It's free, faster, more reliable,
and from what I hear, more secure.

Best regards,

smackedass
