I keep getting this message over and over. It says "Windows Explorer has
stopped working; windows is is checking for a solution to the problem..."
Then another window pops up and says "Windows Explorer is restarting..." it
repeats this process every TWO SECONDS!!!! I need help because I am unable to
use the basic functions of my computer. I am running Windows VIsta Home
Premium

Here are some suggestions that I've read that other users suggested to try:

* Create a new account in Vista and log in to that account to see if Windows
Explorer continues to crash or not. If not, the problem exists in the
previous account. If Windows Explorer continues to crash in the newly
created profile, return to your account / profile.

* Reinstall or install an updated video driver in Vista.

* Perform a repair installation of Vista.

YMMV.

Click Windows Orb, Type Msconfig, approve the UAC Dialog Box, Click
Diagnostic Startup.
See what happens

Sounds like an explorer plugin that isn't compatible.

Did you install any 'old' software that adds new items to the explorer
context menus? That's probably the culprit.

Try uninstalling it, but that pops up the question: how do you launch
the 'programs and features' control panel in Vista without using the
control panel - wich is just another view of explorer? I really
wouldn't know.

Can you get into the start menu to open a cmd prompt at all, or is it
the shell instance of explorer.exe that keeps crashing?

A beter solution is to ditch Vista and go back to XP (or get XP Pro if
you have Home.)

So, have you tried Firefox or Mozilla?

If the computer had Vista pre-installed, it would be harder to get XP
installed on the computer, especially all the drivers needed for the
computer.

Solution:

Boot from Windows Vista DVD and hit any key when prompted. Once windows has
detected your OS click next. Select Systems Restore and select a point
previous to the "Windows Explorer Loop Of Death" (As I like to call it). And
Vwala your computer will be returned to working status. If you do not have a
Microsoft VIsta DVD then this won't help. Contact Microsoft at 18004269400
for further help

Possible Explination for Problem:

I found this problem was caused by either the installation of Logitech
Setpoint, because this program did not install properly or when windows
Defender detected an action on my computer that it did not find to be safe. I
am not sure if Defender was started by Setpoint or from some other auction,
but after I restarted windows at the request of Defender all of the problems
started happening.

Um, no... XP drivers are still quite comm for most peripherals and
aren't going anywhere... I doubt it would be difficult at all to redo a
a Vista pre-installed comp with XP Pro.

In fact many people who are building new systems are using XP Pro SP2
and having success, I wonder why that is :)

Please come back with that remark after you have learned the
difference between a web browser and a shell.

What I mean is, I'm getting T-I-R-E-D of those knowitalls who blame
everything on MS just because everyone else does, but whose only
understanding of the difference between a ballpoint and a pencil is
that you can use either to write :(

Even when it *is* MS's fault (as it is here, by pure chance).

After 16 hours I discovered that Vista, by default, restricts
functions that may help solve this problem. For me, the following
fixed problems that I encountered with programs stopping including
Windows Explorer, IE7, Yahoo, Outlook, Media Player 11 and a host of
others. This was after Dell told me to format my hard drive and
reinstall XP2 then install the Vista upgrade .... SAY WHAT?

Turn User Account Control on or off

User Account Control (UAC) can help you prevent unauthorized changes
to your computer. It works by prompting you for permission when a task
requires administrative rights, such as installing software or
changing settings that affect other users.

We don't recommend turning User Account Control off. If you do turn it
off, you should turn it back on as soon as possible.

Click to open User Accounts.

Click Turn User Account Control on or off. If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.

Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your
computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off
UAC, and then click OK.

I THOUGHT THAT VISTA WAS AN IMPROVEMENT OVER XP BUT THIS IS LIKE THE OLD BLUE
SCREEN OF DEATH FROM 95 & 98! I HAVE MY NEW VISTA COMPUTER FOR 2 WEEKS NOW &
THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WHEN DOWNLOADING. I AGREE THE ONLY SLUTION IS TO
RESTORE TO AN EARLIER POINT.

Dude, just wait until you lose access to the Control Panel, desktop
personalization, 3D Flip, and printing! This happens on many Dells, and so
far no one has come up with a solution, except to reboot. Sigh.

And on top of everything else, it breaks your shift key.
