Windows explorer hangs

Hi,

I have seen many threads regarding this problem, and none of them have
completely been able to provide complete solution and almost all of them have
different symptoms. So here is mine.

I have Windows XP Professional with SP2 running on my IBM thinkpad laptop.
I have the latest updates, enterprise level viruscan and adware removel
utilities.

Here is my issue:

XP bootsup with no issues, all the processes load up fine, and right after
booting up I open windows explorer to browse and it takes about 30 seconds
and everything comes up (I think slowness is because of mapped network
drives). I close explorer with no issues either. As the day progress and I
open and close explorer multiple times with no issues, but around the 4th to
5th time when I open explorer it hangs, I have left it open for 2 hrs and
nothing will come up, I have to kill the process manually but when I do that
my computer hangs as well, I have to do hard shutdown and bootup to get this
working again. I have another collegue with same exact issue, I do not see
any errors related to this in event viewer nor do I get any error messages
when the explorer hangs.

Has others ran into this issue as well, and if someone has a fix for this
that would be great because this has become a serious problem for me.

Study what is going on using Process Explorer.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
image name producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

Something else to look at.

You may check on pagefile (virtual memory) usage with Page File Monitor for
XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

Make sure you study the readme.txt file carefully to ensure
you get the utility to work as it should.

Hope this helps.
