Some Explorer Operations Cause It to Hang

T

Tecknomage

This is a new one to me. Lately when I do SOME operations in Explorer
there is a general hang/delay for any other operation.

Specific example that just happened:

1) Opened Explorer to a folder

2) Renamed a file, took a small time to complete after [Enter] (this
is not the problem), and closed

3) Clicked [Start] to open another program and it opened then hung
there, my CPU fan revved up (it's variable), after 15sec or so the
menu closes and everything on my system is OK (I can now use [Start]
normally)

Note that during the hang the mouse works but I cannot lunch any new
app. And this is only one specific example.

This is an intermittent problem but has been more noticeable for a
week or more. I *think* this has something that MAY have started
after I installed IE8, but I'm not sure.

*IF* this is an IE8 caused problem, this is more evidence of why I've
always thought Microdunce's decision to integrate IE into the desktop
was a BIG mistake. WEB Browsers should be independent apps.

Anyone else seen this symptom?

sometimes, the index service along
with the anti-virals can burden the
system.

see is disabling them helps.

you might also try reviewing the
performance via the safe modes.

I am not running indexing on any drive. In fact I have it set to index
ONLY bootup via a Prefetch (aka indexing) Registry setting.

But, it could be my McAfee Antivirus. IF I remember correctly, this
started when the last major McAfee update that updated the program
files.

I'm dumping McAfee when I get home and switching to BitDefender.

that's a good idea.

if mccrapafee is in your
startups,

you can use a clean boot
to double check your
theory.

UPDATE

I uninstalled McAfee. Sure enough my system operated normally, no
Explorer hang-ups.

Installed BitDefender Antivirus 2009, no hang up problems.

CAUTION; Tired BitDefender Antivirus 2010 first (because it's the
latest) but there is a MAJOR but with my hardware. The install was OK
including the install-reboot. But after that, on ALL reboots or
shutdowns I got the BSoD after the logoff dialogs were gone, at the
point of actual shutdown/reboot. Tried server times, including
reinstalls, even contacted BitDefender Support. Nothing worked. So I
installed BitDefender Antivirus 2009, which I had already, and this
version has no problems.

This is a problem specific to my hardware (since I know others that
use the 2010 version with no problem). There IS a problem with
uninstalling BitDefender, even with their Uninstall Tool, some or all
Registry entries are NOT removed. This presents a special problem when
some of the Registry entries refer to Services, which means you cannot
remove the entries in normal mode, you have to use Safe Mode to
manually remove these.

The bottom line is that the last McAfee Antivirus update DID cause the
bog-down of my system and BitDefender Antivirus 2009 was the solution.

D

db

good to know.

thanks.
