Windows Explorer error and shutdown problem

While exploring folders etc I get this message followed
by the application closing:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe, generated an application error
The error occurred on 12/31/2003 @ 18:52:04.796 The
exception generated was c0000005 at address 77F83907
(ntdll!RtlSizeHeap)

The error text varies, but the outcome is the same. I
reinstalled XP (without formatting) and the error
persists. Any ideas would be appreciated!
