SVChost.exe hangs up on shutdown

Ted A

I get a an error message on shutdown that says
SVChost.exe application error.

The message I get reads:

The application, C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe,
generated an application error The error occurred on
12/29/2003 @ 09:40:58.437 The exception generated was
c0000005 at address 00000019 ()

Can anyone suggest how to correct this problem?

Thanks in advance.

SVCHost is just a program that provides the interface between the system
and a whole slew of 'services' - maybe 40 or 50 of them. So it is one
of those services that is causing trouble, and you have to determine
which - not easy, as disabling some will prevent the system starting at
all. So go to Control Panel - Admin tools - Services, and select a few
plausible ones to try and Stop them - then try the shutdown and see if
you have found the culprit. When you have a group containing it, split
that down and try again until you identify the specific one.
Suggestions to try would be

Any possible third party software that might use a service, especially
Symantec Live Update. Try that first if it is there

Of Windows ones
SSDP Discovery
Universal PnP
(stop both - this is I think the most likely)
Background Intelligent Transfer
Routing and Remote Access
Alerter
Windows Messenger (this has nothing to do with Windows Instant
Messaging)
Automatic Updates
Indexing Service

(all of which you can probably do without)
Windows Time
Wireless discovery (only needed if you have a wireless network)
