When I double pick the My Computer Icon, the system clears the screen for about a second, then the computer re-displays the desktop without opening an explorer window.

Scan for virus (I had a similar problem)

Sounds like you have some corrupt system files, try this
with your install cd handy, JIC
Start RUN SFC /SCANNOW

I've not heard of a virus causing this, although it's
entirely possible.

Dear Friend:

I had the same problem, I tried to solve it in that way, but I have a
problem: Windows asks me to insert, apparently, the *exact* same CD
that it was Win2kPro originally installed from. The problem is that I
don't have it, because my Computer came with Win2kPro pre installed.

And if I insert a similar CD of Win2kPro, a CD that I have from
another computer, it rejects it. What can I do?

The program is contained within windows, it's a System
file checker ie SFC.
it's not going to be found on the install cd in a readable
format, on the install cd it's compressed.
you will need to for future reference.
so do this.
boot windows once you have the desktop, go to the start
icon located at the left hand bottom on the screen (your
task bar) click it once, you will see a menu, one option
is run, highlight that, then at the box, type in
SFC /scannow

This is a system file checker utility, that checks all of
your (system) files for missing and or corrupted files
and replaces them with know good ones, you should have the
install cd available, as it may ask for it.

Since you have formatted and reinstalled, you have
replaced your system files anyway, but keep this for
future info.
