Windows explorer crashes

Win XP explorer keeps on crashing intermittently. I may
be moving some files or clicking around a directory, and
the taskbar dissappears for a second or so, then comes
back and all the taskbar icons reload, as do the desktop
items. I have all the latest XP service packs and updates
running.

Using AMD 2500+XP, 512mb ddr 2700, gigabyte motherboard
 
Is it safe to assume that you have recently run an up-to-date virus scan?
