windows explorer crashing

When looking at the event viewer, the only thing around
the time windows explorer crashes is winlogon and service
control manager.

Again, when WE crashes, the taskbar and desktop icons
disappear for a couple of seconds. Lately I've noticed
that one of the things to set it off is closing a winXP
window, like the control panel and my recycle bin.

None of that helped.
