You need to post a complete Error Report!

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Doubt it, refer below.

What you want is some reference to the below message.
You may have a mini dump that you can post. On XP and 2003 systems,
mini dumps are located at %SystemRoot%\Minidump, or c:\Windows
\Minidump.

If you don't have one, make sure it is Enabled. Then after your next
error, you should have one.
Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery -->
Settings ---> Write debugging information --> Complete memory dump.

That's an Information Report which I tend to ignore. Look for Error or
Warning Reports. Look for the first ones that occur after the system
was last booted.

unfortunatly or fortunatly as the case may be, error reports don't come up
after reboot, windows explorer crashes then i get the message "0x02de415b,
0x00000000", it then restarts minus a few icons on the notification area, and
sometimes the apperances change temporarily i.e open windows appear to look
like a win98 OP rather than XP.

Cheers for your help so far

Do you have a XP cd that matches your install, in other words, if you
have XP pro with SP2, it is all on the same cd ( not separate )

J

jmatt

yes, SP2 is on the Windows disk

Ok, you do have all your important stuff backed up ( including emails
& address book ) don't you?

ReInstalling WindowsXP
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm
Reinstall WindowsXP and keep all your current installed applications
and settings:
Put your XP cd in the drive.
If " D " is your CD rom drive.
D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste that command into the RUN
box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.

It was an upgrade (to Pro)install last week from home edition, but i was
having the problem before then as well. Do you really think a reinstallation
is necessary?
