I'm useing XP home addition. For a while now, I have been getting a message -
Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvience. If you are in the middle of somthing data may be lost. -
Then it closes Windows down. This happens at various times. Ihave clicked
Send a Report many times. Some times there is an additional message -
DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sorry etc. How can I get rid of this problem?

Hi rhomesteader,

sfc /scannow you need the Windows XP HE CD inserted in the DVD or CD
Drive.

Go Start Run and type in cmd and click OK. In the DOS Box, type in sfc
/scannow and hit enter.

The purpose: To check Windows System files to make sure nothing has
changed, and if changed to correct the problem found without the need to
reinstall Windows XP Home Edition.

Creator: Thanks for the reply. But I bought the machine new from HP about 3
years ago and they did not give me the Windows disk. I have talked to their
help support and have been told I will have to wipe out everything on the C
drive except the programs that came with the machine. I'm hoping for a
better solution. I saw mention in an earlier post by someone that had the
exploer closing problem and a replier mentioned a "hot fix" (what ever that
is) kb892052. I am current on updated from Microsoft. Is there a way I can
be sure I got kb892052? They don't seem to be listed in order anywhere.
I also get a window that says" The key code you entered cannot be validated.
Please contact customer support." The oly program I have installed for a
long time is a new Norton Anti Virus. A couple of days ago I removed it and
then reinstalled it. No canage.

Tech support from most major OEMs is like that. They have no troubleshooting
skills and aren't interested in taking the time to even try to help. If they
don't know the immediate answer they quickly tell you to reload Windows from
scratch.

I'm hoping for a better solution.

I don't blame you. I wish I had a better answer for you, but based on what
you've told us so far (not really much information), I don't. When it
happens next, reboot., then check the event log and post what you find
around that time. Perhaps someone here will be able to help.

You can read here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892052 But it's highly
uinlikely that this will help you. It's for an Internet Explorer problem,
and your problem is with Windows Explorer.

Hi rhomesteader,

There is a way for you to save your data and get Windows XP Home Edition
straighten out. It is to buy the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Upgrade CD. This way you will be able to fix the problems that may come up
in the future.

But, you may want to decide if you are going to upgrade to Windows
Vista, first and which platform and even if you are going to buy a new
computer or build it yourself, in the near future.

If you buy the XP HE Upgrade CD, here is the procedure to follow:

Procedure to Reinstall Windows XP!

If you want to save any files, make a backup of those files off the Hard
Drive and proceed.

00. - Turn off the printer.
01. - Go into Computer Bios and Set Defaults and Exit, if you know how.
Make sure the Boot Order is set to Boot to CD-Rom Drive First.
02. - Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom Drive.
03. - Reboot the computer.
04. - Press any key to begin to boot from the Windows XP CD.
05. - Welcome to Setup.
06. - Reinstall XP - Press Enter
07. - F8 - I Agree
08. - Esc: Don't Repair
09. - Select Windows XP Highlighted Partition to repair Windows XP on.
10. - Press Enter.
11. - Follow on screen prompts to allow the Deletion and reinstallation of
the Windows XP System Files.
12. - Then Copies files to partition.
13. - Now it Reboots to Windows XP. Don't press a key to boot to CD.
14. - And now it installs Windows XP.
15. - You need to be here now.
16. - Starts at 39 Minutes to Complete.
17. - At 33 minutes, you need to set Time and Time Zone, if need to.
18. - And Enter The Product Key.
19. - At 29 minutes, you need to pick the Network, if needed to.
20. - Now wait for Reboot and you are done.
21. - Go online and go to Windows Update and download and reinstall all the
patches.

Note: - If you have the original Windows XP CD, not Service Pack 2 CD, you
will need to have already downloaded to Your Briefcase Folder,
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

You must install Windows XP Service Pack 2 before you can use Windows
Update. Also you must install the tool to validate your copy of Windows
after upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2, before you can begin to
reinstall all the Windows XP Patches.

Ken , Thanks for the reply. I don't know what the "Events Log" is . How do
I find it?

Hi rhomesteader,

The Events Log is located:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

The choices in there are Application, Security and System
