Windows explorer and the swap file.

Other program makers have support. They give something back for the money I
have paid. Microsoft dont care about the users.

The swapfile is not cleared after file manager have used it.
File manager cause memory problem both in RAM and swap file.
It shows by I need to reboot computer every 15 minutes as XP pro stops to
respond.
I have a new computer without reset button. Latest ver of XP pro + latest
updates.
I have a clean install with firewall and AV + Ad aware and Spybot.
So, system is clean. Explorer dont work as it should and have been a problem
in all versions of Windows.

If I try to mark one file or folder, several or all files/folders are marked.

What I have marked may change at the same moment I press the key to move or
erase files.
This have cost me a lot of damage.

Usually there is no much problem to erase less than 600 files but more will
take up more and more of the swapfile until it reach around 2.5 GB and XP
freeze to ice.
But problem starts long before XP have frosen to ice.

Other programs are not affected as long Windows is running.
Other programs have no I/O problems to the same disk at the same time.
I have suspected conection and driver problems for the SATA disk but as
other program use the disk without problems there is no disk problem.
Its only Explorer that is a problem and it has been well know in all version
of Windows but the latest seems to definitively be the worse of all.

Only Explorer is affected by this.

I need a replacement for Windows Explorer if anyone have suggestions.

It take too loooong time to erase file with file manager.

I have noticed that Zilla shred can overwrite files 3 times and do this much
faster than file manager can erase the same files and Zilla dont mess with
memory as Explorer does.

I mark the files. Wait some minutes for this to be visible. Right click to
get drop down menu what to do with the files. I can wait 30 minutes for this
menu and I often need to retry several times.

I manage to mark erase or cut for moving the files. Wait and wait. It may
work after 30 minutes but usually not.

This damn XP is not a OS, it worse tham a virus.

Microsoft have never been able to make an OS and will never be.

Instead of support they deny every problem.

Explorer cause "errores in file system" this shows as corrupt or emty, 0
byte files.
Files and folders that cannot be erased or moved. Acces denied.
This have cost me more than 200 GB of data.

It very expensive to use an OS that cannot be trusted.

Also file and folder names are blanked out.
Explorer cant show thumbnails, only a few thumbnails are showed in a folder
the rest is blank frames. Explores cannot show file icons.
This seems to be lack of memory. I have 2 GB RAM and 3 GB swapfile.

All my other programs together in hard use, all of it use less than 400 MB
swapfile.

Pegasus,

if you don t have anything more intelligent to add to this problem, please
stay out of it.

You dont know much. I Have used MS since MS DOS ver 2.0 and I use my PC
daily 365 days/year at lest 8 hrs every day.

I know how "clients" use their computers, it is running the whole day for
maybe 5 minutes of work. I use one keyboard and one mouse every year and I
really use it as long as possible.

I tell you that this new version of XP is shit and have cause me a lot of
problem.

I am installing it right now on another disk, no other program and no
internet connections so the damn thing is without AV, firewall and everything
but the problem is still there. So, stop defend useless MS.

They make shit and they shall have shit for it.

Pegasus,
please read all other complaints in this newsgroup about Explorerer and the
swapfile.
Why do you post here?
There are 3 types of users here.
They who have problems with windows.
They who maybe have found a solution of this problem. MS will never find it
themselves. Its why they use newsgroups instead of support. They depend on
clever users that help them fix problems.
The third group of users here are trolls.
Which one are you?
Just a question.

You forgot a fourth group: Those who start their post with an
unqualified complaint, e.g. "Other program makers have support.
They give something back for the money I have paid. Microsoft
dont care about the users.", then continue moaning and whingeing
throughout their note.

A good post contains a concise summary of the problem,
followed by a well-focused question. Your lament contains
neither, which may explain the lack of responses.

If you want MS support, a retail version of XP comes with 3 free support
incidents. If OEM you are you're the support.

There is a problem with your installation, it's not a pervasive problem with
Explorer in Windows XP. Something about the hardware, drivers and software
on your system. The only way you will be able to figure this out is to
start fresh and do troubleshooting/testing every step of the way to
determine where the root cause lies.

Thanks, Rock

(Sorry to not being able to keep it short as Pegasus want it but its not an
easy problem.) Also it have been bringed up several times by different users
but not yet any solution.)
but I have install it too many times now. I have already tried what you
suggest. First this version didnt install on SATA drive. The old version do,
without problem. But it cannot be used, it will not update.

I have two versions of XP pro, I dont remember if the old is with or without
SP1 but the new has all exept latest Explorer and Mediaplayer.
I think it is 2 years between these two versions and what upset me most is
that the old one works, it worked util a damage a year ago but I continue to
use it for a year util I got this new version.

(As I dont live in my own contry I cant get support, I am even not allowed
to buy Windows in my own language. Friends must buy it for me. Therefore this
time I bought OEM because I dont want to pay for something I cant get)
Thats really great support from MS. I have fight for the right for a OS in
my own language 14 years now. Still cant buy it.

I have the old copy of XP, I can change now in less than a minute and that
version does not have this problem but other problems.
Therefore it is totally out of question that this depend on hardware.
Checking on it, even the old SATA disk with an early XP pro does not have
this problem, the old install on ATA dont have this problem.

NEW install today not finished, no programs, no AV no connection to internet
and therefore not updated but it was bought just before christmas.

The 2 new install (bought christmas) dont work on SATA/ATA.
The old XP pro have other problems but not this actual problem.
The old works on both ATA/SATA

I have done everything I can to find the problem.

I have one more to add, it seems that this problem also change upper/lower
case letter and that change the behavier of marker and cause a lot of
problems.

Filename lost, I can get them back by renaming parent folder.

Everything seems to be normall until I start moving and erasing files. As
other have bringed up here that it depends on thumbnails is shown or not, I
have come to the conclosion thats not important.
But today, I reboot and thereafter used Explorer normal without showing
thumbnails and for the most of day I had no problem until I changed to show
thumbnails and shortly after that the computer stoped to respond.

It seems to depend on thumbnails is showed or not and at the same time erase
of more than (also important) more than 600 image files (jpg) 600 picture
files.

I need to use thumbnails to sort-move-erase these files. Else I dont have
problems with explorer.

Upgrade the BIOS. Try different chipset drivers, try different drivers for
the SATA. Disable SATA and install on the ATA drive, test. Use a zero fill
utility to zero out the drive before installing. Try different RAM. Get a
different motherboard. Use different CD drives. Try a different XP SP2 CD.
Create an XP SP2 CD from your old installation CD using slipstreaming.

It's not a problem that is inherent in the OS, otherwise everyone would see
it. It is likely an interaction of the hardware and/or drivers with that
copy of XP SP2. There is also the possibility that you can't pin it down,
and it just won't work on the hardware you have.
