OK....so I've made a couple data DVD's - on DVD-R with a Dell XPS running
Windows XP Pro SP2.

Inserted into a Asus W2V notebook running Windows XP SP 2 with a Matshita
UJ-858S DVD-RAM drive.

Will not read.

Tested the data DVD-R on three other computers (Thinkpad G40, Dell 4600, and
Acer)...all read well.

On the Asus, nothing comes up. Loaded Nero 6.0 thinking maybe new software
would help...but nothing.

The Asus plays movie DVDs OK.

The DVD is set for Region 1 (I'm in the U.S.).

When I right-click the DVD drive in Explore, I get "Windows does not
recognize the format".

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.
John

Peter,

Thanks for your note.

I used Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0 to make the DVDs...

After your comment, I went to Microsoft support and read:

"Certain "drag-and-drop" recording programs (for example, the Adaptec/Roxio
DirectCD program) allow the use of "compression" when you format discs.
Compression is not a part of the OSTA UDF standard, and discs that have
compression may not be readable by any UDF reader except readers from that
software vendor."

I guess this is the problem.

The Asus came with Nero as its DVD/CD writing program. I wonder if this is
better....?

Thanks for your help.
John

Is your DVD-Ram on that Asus in reads in UDF format?

So...I've configured desktop and laptop with exactly the same software
(Roxio Easy Creator 7.0 with update downloaded today).

Preferences are firmly set to UDF...

Still, a data-DVD made on the desktop just will not read on the laptop.

Yes, I have DLA and make sure that Make Compatible is hit before ejecting.

Help!

Thanks
John
