I wonder if it were better to open a text editor (eg notepad) and
insert the result *there*; as a "print screen" in DOS is exactly that -
a record of the characters, currently displayed on the monitor.

DOS as a graphics file - that probably won't work.

I guess, you'd like to capture a DOS graphics and not a text mode
screen? You'll find some old DOS screen capture programs to work
under Windows. A good one is Screen Thief by Jim Hoggarth:

http://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/gifutil.html
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/gifutil/st201f.zip

You just start it inside the command or cmd window your target program
runs in. Either create a batch file which first starts Screen Thief and
after that your program. Or open a command/cmd prompt window and start
the programs one after another. The default hotkey is Ctrl+Alt+T. But
you can change this (and a lot other options) by command line and/or
config file and/or environment variable. Run

st /?

to get a complete reference environment.

HTH.

B. R. 'BeAr' Ederson I have tried that program and I have had no
success.

For 1 the stupid game I'm trying to run won't load after running screen
theif in cmd mode.
Just gives me a blank screen.

I also have tried using two different cmd windows and that doesn't work
either.

Anyone else? Much appreciated

2 mad options you could try:
1. Take a digital photo snapshot of the screen.
2. Go on the net and see if you can find an advert of the game, with
perhaps the shot you want.

I do like to have my own screen pics, as it's for my site. I don't have
a camera.

Thankyou anyway

Make the cmd Window full-screen *before* starting the game. (Hit
Alt+Enter to do this.) You could switch back to window mode by
hitting Alt+Enter again, but you will (most likely permanently)
loose the visibility of the game. Quitting the game could become
a bit tricky. So don't try the switch-back to window mode... ;-)

No. That's *supposed* to not work.

If the suggestion above will not work, I'll dig a bit deeper into
that. It would help to know, what resolution and color depth your
game runs. (Should be mentioned inside the documentation of the
game.) Else you can tell us the name of the game. So we might find
the necessary information ourselves.

I tried the fullscreen and it still didn't show anything on screen
except black.

The game I'm trying to capture is abuse. Would you like to try.

If so, download is here the windows version

Thankyou very much. Screen resolution default 320 * 200

I'm running a vga monitor, hope this helps

That's nice. Out of interest I, nevertheless, had a look into the
problem with your game and Screen Thief. Both work fine together,
as long as no EMS/VCPI driver is active. Regardless of starting
within DOS with Emm386 loaded or Windows 9x or Win2k - the game
hangs or crashes, when ST has been started beforehand.

The game uses the DOS/4G extender. Other programs compiled with
this extender work fine with ST. So it is not a general failure
of ST in combination with DOS/4G.

To get screenshots, anyway ,without the need to boot to DOS (without
EMM386 driver loaded): DOSBox with standard setup should do well:

Thanks for all your help

You're welcome.
