windows does not start after power outage

Hi,
I have Windows Xp on my old computer I was downloaded IE7 on it when I
accidently hit the power bar. When I restarted my computer it tries to
start, it goes through the normal startup then to the screen that asks how I
want to start , in safe mode, normal mode etc. It doesn't matter which mode
I choose it always restarts then goes to the start mode choice screen. Any
help would be appreciated, thanks!

If IE7 is installed it must/should be remove before doing a Windows XP
repair install. If the installation doesn't boot from the Recovery
Console issue these commands, pressing <Enter> after each:

CD ie7\spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer
7 is installed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;917964

It's unclear how far in the IE7 install the OP was but it would be a
good idea to see if the the installation or partial installation can be
removed.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think IE 7 was installed before I hit the
power bar but I was playing with my dogs at the same time so I dunno. I
tried to reinstall XP from my cd but I get to the license agreement press F1
I agree and nothing. I can press ESC I do not agree or scroll down then my
computer reboots to how to startup screen.

I thought you were supposed to press F8 to accept the EULA? If the
Function keys don't work it could be because your keyboard has an "F
Lock" key and it isn't enabled.

yes it is F8 key not F1 a typing error on my part. Some of the functions are
available on my keyboard such as page down or do not accept, the only one is
F8 that does not proceed. Thanks for the reply.

Page Up/Page Down are not Function keys, the Function keys are the F1 to
F12 keys. Check again to see if the keyboard has an F-Lock or Function
Lock key. If you can't find any such lock key try a different keyboard.

I did have the function keys locked and once I unlocked the keyboard i got
past the license agreement to the screen where it asks for other versions of
windows, 95,98, Millinium all but my XP cd. I purchased my XP as an upgrade
and no longer have the previous version of Windows, thanks to my son. I have
the empty cd sleeve for Win 95 but that is no help to me. Can I download the
necessary files it needs make a cd to boot up my old computer?
Thanks for the help and suggestions

You need an actual cd, you can't download that from the internet.
Windows NT & Windows 2000 cds are also acceptable. You will have to
find a copy of a real cd to do the installation, someone in your
entourage may have one that you can borrow.

Thanks for the replies, I have called around and can get Windows Me, however
the computer that this cd is on is an internet computer so I can't use it's
registeration # only one computer per # right? I'm supposed to get it later
this afternoon, can I bypass the registration and continue on with my Windows
XP cd?
Another question, my laptop has Windows Vista, wireless internet and is
losing hard drive space, like 10 gb overnight. My connection is secure I
formatted because I have no space left and now see it's filling up again.
I've defragged, cleaned up, checked disk for errors contacted Sony so now I
flip the wifi switch to Off. Any help is appreciated.

You don't need to install the older Windows version, nor do you need to
supply the "registration #" of the previous version. During the
installation the XP upgrade version will ask to "see" an older Windows
version and once it "sees" it that will be it, it won't ask for anything
else, it will proceed to install Windows XP if the old cd qualifies.
Technically and legally the previous Windows version is not supposed to
be kept on a different computer, legally it becomes "bound" to the
upgrade XP version. To be fully legal, and to avoid this problem the
next time you need to cleanly reinstall, you could buy an old version
somewhere like ebay or from a rummage or yard sale. For the Vista
problem start a new discussion thread in an appropriate Vista help group.

Thanks so much for the advice, my old computer is now up and running again!!
I will check out ebay to get another OS cd for this computer and not let my
son and his sticky fingers near it. I thought I would be doing alot of
configuring with the network and internet settings but it seemed to take
right off and did it all for me.
Now to download IE7 I'll be careful to stay away from the power bar.
Thanks again!!!

Once you got the "new" CD, you could make a duplicate of this CD and
place you "new" original is a "safer" place.
