'Windows did not start successfully'

S

Stevie Mono

I've just returned from a weeks holiday, switched PC on and hit problems -
hope someone can help?

Running Windows XP Home edition with SP2, but struggling to get the
operating system loaded!

I first got a 'No signal input to monitor' displayed and have seen this
before so done same as preiously and disconnected/reconnected monitor
connector from PC, then rebooted.

'Windows did not start properly' screen came up but I have struggled to
continue beyond here....the timer does it's countdown to 0 then does nothing,
or if I make a selection and press 'return' or 'enter', the screen freezes
with the timer stopping on whatever number of seconds it reached!!

If I select Safe mode all the drivers appear to get loaded but then stops at
Mup.sys

If I select 'Last known config' screen goes blank and nothing.

If I select 'Start Windows normally' nothing happens.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have now taken 2 steps forward and 1 back!!

I found the Windows installation disc and inserted into a drive. However,
sometimes a re-boot appears to fail part-way thro' the BIOS load and just
stop.

If the BIOS does complete, the Windows drivers get loaded, then Windows
Set-up says it is starting Windows, but nothing happens??

Does this sound like a hardware issue? Where do I start looking?

I recently agreed to help my girlfriend sort out her PC problems and now I'm stuck at the same screen as posted above... the exact same problem, every time I select an option it freezes, safe mode loads up to mup.sys and freezes, and Last know good ect. Goes Blank... Please help.

You do realize the words "as posted above" have no value in this
newsgroup. Especially since you started a new message thread.

what problem would that be.? I can't see what it is you're referring to.

Please repost the entire problem.

Here is the post but I'm going to stop searching too if people want
help to solve their problems then they should be so kind to state it
in a very precise way. I'm going to address one point in the
following post at the end:

################ end of quote

When one turns on a monitor first, the message "no signal
cable disconnect or some such" is seen shortly this doesn't
mean anything is wrong with the Monitor. It gets signals
from a running PC so no need to unplug the Monitor if it is
normally working.

Kids leave the Monitor plugged in, and only remove the cable if
there is a REALLY a "serios" problem.

feed it the recovery disk and start from there. Or get some real OS.

Off-topic remark start >>

Today at work I almost fell off my chair laughing.

On a USB-Stick I got some excel and powerpoint files, but on this
PC neither excel nor powerpoint is installed, so windows is
searching for a application on the net. And then it gives me the
message that "windows couldn't recognise the file".

All of these files were created on another WinXP PC..... Thanks for
the laugh Redmond dudes....

Off topc ends :) <<
