Windows did not start successfully message

Hi
for the past couple of weeks when I start up the computer I get a message
saying something like " Windows did not start successfully we apologise for
the inconvenience. A recent hardware or software change may have caused
this...etc". I then get the option to start windows normally, as well as use
last working configuration, or words to that effect. I have used both ways ,
and sometimes they work straight away and sometimes it can take several
attempts to get started.
Is there any way that I can resolve this problem so Windows starts normally?
Thanks in advance for your help

Thanks for the advice - unfortunately it seems extremely complicated. Was
hoping it would be an easy to fix problem. Could I just reinstall Windows
afresh after saving my settings?

Sure, backup any data you don't want to lose, format & reinstall Windows

1. Insert Windows XP CD
2. Restart computer, press a key to boot from CD
3. Press Enter to Setup Windows XP
4. Delete the partition & create a new one
5. Format & being installation

Good luck

Yes,you could surely reinstall Windows. But repair installation is easier.
I shall suggest you to go through the following link:-
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Check point XP 'Repair Install'

Enter the BIOS and make sure that the first booting device is from
CD-ROM.Save the changes.Restart your computer with XP CD inserted into
the CD-ROM drive, follow on screen instructions.Select the XP
installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the
repair.
Everything is written very nicely in the above link.Just follow it.

Try this. Use Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the
Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the
Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "Automatically
restart" to clear it. Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Now when you start up the computer and it fails on the first attempt
you may get a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message. If this
happens then the contents of the STOP error, including all of the
parameters, will be a direct clue as to the underlying cause of your
problems.

Post the STOP error message information back here if you need further
advice or assistance with it, or you can check out the error yourself
using MVP Jim Eshelman's STOP errors web page at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Good luck
