Windows Defender will not update

When I click update it does nothing, usually its done automatic, past week
I've worked with MS and had to uninstall and reinstall all of the
Netframeworks because of Windows updates were not updating.

I tried to download the updates and reinstall/upgrade but that failed.

Consider going to the secuÑity portal

<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/>

and downloading the 32-bit definitions for Windows Defender to the desktop,
then *right* click mpas-fe.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'
to apply.

See if that both brings you up to date, and perhaps improves on the behavior
in future.

have you upgraded to the version avg9 because this is turning defender off

If windows update is not working, Windows Defender won't update
automatically. Having Windows Update working is more important than
Windows Defender, in terms of protecting your machine.

Engel has given the way to get Windows Defender updated manually--so you can
do that, but I would urge you to continue to work with Microsoft's free
support to get Windows Update working.

The work you did on the dot net frameworks will help with those specific
updates, but I don't believe it will help with the underlying issue of
Windows Update not working.
