Windows Defender post an update every hour

I run Vista on a Compaq. I use Firefox as browser. Downloaded Windows
Defender about 6 months ago and have had no problems until recently. Just
last week I started getting a pop-up window about once every hour that says
'Windows Defender has finished downloading the updates. Please check OK to
finish the updating process.' Of course I do and then I answer the
authorization key shortly thereafter. Obviously this is waaaaaay too often.
Help!!!! Thanks.

In Vista, MS Windows Defender is a part of the operating system--it is not
separately uninstallable or installable.

I am having the exact same problem. Windows defender is not active in my
system. I'm going to disable the service at Startup to see if this solves
the problem

Me too! Just recently, in the last week, Defender hourly tells me it has
"windows defender finished downloading the update"...."click ok". Then the
Vista control panel comes up asking if I authorized this -- sometimes I say
yes, sometimes I say no. Either way, exactly one hour later I get the exact
same message. Any ideas? I disable the service at Startup but it still
happens.

This sounds like a stuck update--this can happen with other automatic
updates--either the install is incomplete or fails, and it keeps repeating
over and over again.

In this case, I'd recommend going to the Security Portal and downloading the
current definitions there--if that succeeds, it should take care of the
sticking issue.

www.microsoft.com/security/portal look for definition updates for Windows
Defender in the upper left corner area.

This same problem is driving me insane. I have disabled the service to not
allow it to startup as well as disabled the software in order to prevent it
to want to look for updates. None of this works. It still prompts for the
update. I wish I could find a solution - I've been searching everywhere.

This is the same problem I am having, I also have Norton 360 R3 running, it
keeps informing me that there is a "Susppicious.DLoader" (Heuristic Virus)
blocked just before the Windows Defender post on the hour. The Norton
security history shows that the blocked or quarantiened activity is not every
hour however its 59mins 58secs.

This same exact thing has happened to me since the update kb915597 was auto
inst. thru MS.I also use firefox as my browser. I run TrendMicro AV so i do
not run windows firewall or defender, (which is unistallable for my vista
OS)and have researched this problem for DAYS! I have manually d/l the Latest
antispyware definition version: 1.81.966.0 | Released: May 04, 2010 09:30
PM UTC, Run as ADMIN and installed it. Ran CCleaner and did a restart. WINDOW
STILL POPS UP!!!!! PLEASE HELP w/any VALID INTELLIGENT information. Oh yeah
the flip side to the coin is that it is a "stuck" update and will need
another update from Microsoft to correct the problem. If ths is the case This
should let all those affected relize how much power "they" truly have.

I have the exact same problem, except after couple of clicks, I get this
pop-up saying "Error loading C: program/divx_xx0a32.dll" not found" ....
really need help to solve this...I even have problem startup my windows
sometimes it crash the window explorer and I have to restart again, I think
the crash is related to this window defenders problem, because I don't have
the problem before. anyway, I hope someone or the windows support team can
help us on this.

Was any solution ever found for this - I am having the same problem and I'm

I have the same problem here for the last few days. I have Defender turned
off but have both Forefront and Norton running and I notice that around the
same time I get the Defender pop up, Forefront notifies me about a Trojan
(Win32/Dursg.E) and sometimes also a TrojanDownloader (Win32/Tracur.A).

Also, just today Norton started popping up a potential threat in LSASS.EXE.
