Windows Defender caused Windows Update to be Inop

Ever since I downloaded Windows Defender, automatic updates and automatic
scanning never worked in Windows Defender. Come to find out, my Windows
Updates didn't work anymore, either. Had to restore my computer to a date
prior to downloading Windows Defender in order for my Windows Updates to work
again. When I did the restore, Micorsoft AntiSpyware Beta reppeared but
would no longer scan for problems. It no longer works, either. What is
wrong with this Windows Defender program that makes it act like a virus?

XPpro/SP2 Yes I have the same problem. No updating from opening page or
from Windows update. Used the Micosoft solution above and got an error
message: This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the
package exists and that you can access it .... etc

Of course I have re-installed it and what ever I do to update it it remains
at version 1.0.0.0 even though updating is reported as successful. Somewhere
I seem to have read that if one re-installs Defender, then the updater will
only work properly on a new signature update. Any idea if this is true, and,
if so, why?

If you reinstall, you may need to apply the resolution steps in this KB
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

However, these are also useful for other update-related issues.

As to the root "why"-- I don't have a picture of that. I'd bet that the
developers do, however, but I don't know when it will be fixed.
