Defender will not update

S

Scott Hill

I dnloaded and installed Defender it gave notice that definitions are 19
days old so I clicked update botton and nothing happened. Recieved NO notice
that definitions are up-to-date. Later I went to Microsoft update site to
receive newest Windows critical updates, Defender update was also listed
there with Windows criticals. All updates failed and after repeated attempts
over two days Windows update FAILS all attempts at downloading and
installing updates.

I manualy downloaded Windows criticals from the download center and manualy
installed updates. However I could not find a manual download for Defender.

Windows update site still reports to me the Defender update, but fails to
download and install. I have gone through the troubleshooting tips listed, I
made shure all necessary services are running properly for updates to work.

I run Windows XP Pro 64 bit Edition everything else on my system is running
smooth as butter and all my other non-MS apps update with no problems. I
have also tried turnning off all installed application services and startup
applications including Defender, also Safe Mode with networking and updates
fail. I am tempted to uninstall but safe mode did not work so I am stumped
as to what the problem is.

I also run
SpyBot S&D yes resident no teatimer
SpywareBlaster
System:
AMD x64 +3700
2Gig Ram

I'm having the same problem. I am running behind a corporate firewall, but I
had no problems updating the last AntiSpyware beta.

I too cannot update this product. AntiSpyware worked fine, but this one
won't. I tried multiple proxies in my corporate network, but I cannot get
this to update. I did get a message in my taskbar that said:

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update:
0x8024002b"

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,

I just installed Windows Defender 2.0 (Beta) on my genuine windows XP SP2. I
try to get it updated, but it cannot connect to the internet.
I get the following error: Windows Defender was unable to complete the
update: 0x8024002b.
I guess this is because I am behind a proxy. Strangely, the Windows
Automatic Update works and Antispyware worked fine ...

Best Regards,

Julien

I am surprised that the forums are not swarming with this question and so
far I have seen no for sure answers to it. --->See BETA<----- I installed
this product on three of my comps. ALL legal and legit Windows XP versions.
Two at home (Both XP Home) and one at work (XP Pro). It installed fine and
runs fine but it will NOT update! The same error and problem on all three
machines!
The old MS ANtispyware ran great and although a bit ugly it was a great
product in my opinion.

Question?--- 1. Why doesn't MS have a spot where one can manually download
the defs?

I know this is a Beta and there is going to be problems. And it is a nice
gesture that MS (so far) is giving the product away,, but there is always
something annoying about an older release that was working fine that gets
replaced by a new and (improved ) version that seems more broken than the
first.

I am NOT seeing the 0x8024002b error as some others have reported. My
installation simply doesn't find any new updates available.

If I 'Check for Updates', the system try icon notifies me that "Windows
Defender is connecting to the Internet to acquire new definitions and engine
upgrades." A minute or so later the message reads to "Windows Defender found
no new definitions or engine updates available."

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

I'm having exactly the same experience: when I click on "Check for Updates",
the popup from the system tray informs me that it is, then says that it's
found none and quits, leaving the message "Windows Defender definitions
haven't been updated in 21 days" in the application window. Will someone
from the development team please address this issue!?

I have no problems getting updates. Go to IE Internet options then
connections tab and LAN settings and check Automatically detect settings and
reboot and see if can update.

In case nobody decided to troll the rest of the NG, I will copy and paste Steve
Dodson's response to this issue:

If the product is stating defs are 22 days old, they are :) We do not ship
signatures with Beta 2, so users need to download the initial signature file
from Windows Update to reset that counter.

Cannot Update Definitions or engine. Error Code: 0x8024002b
Several Win 2k PC's. None successful so far.

I too have the same issue. I run behind an ISA and have WU disabled with a
policy. I would just like to re-itterate some of the other comments I have
read in connection with this thread.

I am frustrated because this replacement seems to have taken away a
perfectly functional product, in Microsoft Antispyware. Assuming this really
is no longer available?

Surely a simple solution would be to issue the updates as a separate
download until the issue is fixed.

I have tried re-enabling WU but this was to no avail. I am of course still
behind the corporate ISA, so maybe this is the issue. It seems to be a common
theme in the thread.

I look forward to reading a solution when someone posts it. I hope I haven't
already missed one. If I have sorry!

Cheers

Sutty
