I have tried four times to install the new definition update 1.14.1408.8 for
Beta Windows Defender today and the following message came up each time
saying the installation failed.

Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x36B1
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following

Can anyone give me some help resolving this problem?

Try the following. I have had to use it for about a month now. Seems to work
for me every time. It gets rid of the old Signature file and the you can
update it with WD>Help>About WD>Check for updates. Hope this helps. If not,
there are lots of posts here about not being able to update. Have a good day.

1) (As in the other posts:) Go to the "Start" menu and select "Run".

2) Paste in the box "Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" and
click "OK".

3) When the Windows Installer pops up, click "Yes" and it will clean up the
definitions...

(Note: I then went into Defender to the "Help" menu and selected "Exit
Windows Defender" to shut it down completely, then clicked "Yes" to confirm
Defender shut down. This may not be necessary, but why not?)

4) Now go to the "Start" menu, then "Control Panel", and select "Add or
Remove Programs" from the list.

5) Find "Windows Defender" in the list of installed programs, and click it
once so that it changes colour and the buttons appear.

6) Click the "Change" button, then "Next" when the "Windows Defender
Maintenance Wizard" comes up.

7) Select the checkbox "Update Windows Defender" and click "Next".

8) The wizard will say "Ready to Repair the Program". Now click "Install".

9) When the repair is complete the window will have a checkbox that says
"Check for updated definitions and run a quick scan now" which will be
checked. Click "Finish".

The program will open and the definitions will have been reset, then it will
check for, and update to, the newest definition file then run a quick scan.

This is the only way I could get it to work.

Now Windows Update is not bugging me anymore and I have the newest
Definitions!!!
Time for quick scan.

How do you unload it so that you can install the new version or uninstall
it? It keeps saying that it needs to be closed first... but I can't see where
this can be done.

and YES finally after downloading the new version 1.1.1347.0 of WD (which by
the way has the same name "WindowsDefender.msi" with the previus version) the
updated definitions downloaded and installed on my computer. So as of now my
situation is

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1408.8

BEFORE i run the check and install updates and AFTER i installed the new
version my situation was
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Definition Version: 1.0.0.0

After telling it to "Ignore" when doing the uninstall, then installing the
new version, it finally seems to have worked.

Thanks.

I had the same problem. So.. I uninstalled V 1051, downloaded and installed
V1347 (current) and problem fixed, update for sig 1.14.1408.8 worked. Note
- in the previous 7 failures, a file named sigstub.exe was left in a new
folder on my USB external disk. (delete it). This product is NOT beta
ready......
