Windows Defender Stalling

Casey

When I have Windows Defender scan my computer, it gets to "C:\System Volume
Information\MountPointManagerRemoteDatabase" and doesn't continue. The
elapsed time and objects scanned doesn't get updated at that point either.
My desktop is running Windows XP Pro. I have AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm
for protecting my desktop behind my router.

Thanks,

Casey

Hi Casey

Have you tried taking a look at the System Event Viewer to see what sort of
error message WD is generating?

Further to last post. I ask this cos if I recall correctly, the system volume
folder contains info relevant to the hardware on your system. So maybe WD
doesn`t like something about the hardware you have. If it is hardware
related. Perhaps you could cut and paste on here so that the guys at MS not
too mention Bill S and Engel can take a look. In the meantime you could
circumnavigate the issue by adding the offending folder to WD ignore list -
Tools>Options>Advanced Options>Do not scan these files or locations.

Hope this helps

Sorry Casey.. I keep thinking of problems - after the event. Re my last.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be careful with this approach if you think it is hardware related. Those
components require drivers to make them work with the Windows Operating
System - the files usually have a `.sys` extension and have been known to be
used as an avenue of attack. Guess what I`m trying to say in a `round about
way`is ; Know your system and be confident the software you have installed
came from a reliable source - if you decide to adopt my suggestion.

Here's a thread that might help you with a tip from Wesley Vogel (MS-MVP
Windows Shell/User)
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2404701.php

If you delete the contents of that folder the files will be recreated upon
reboot.

There are 3 errors in the application log. They are:

and failed to start.

I've no idea what is going on here, I'm afraid.

Can you do a chkdsk on this drive?

If you open my computer, and right click the drive and choose properties,
then the Tools tab, run the error-checking component--not sure how it is
labelled in XP, Check all the boxes, and restart the machine. This will
take a bit of time, so remember that you have set it to do the check, and
reboot at a time when you can afford to wait for the check to complete and
the machine to become usable. The time needed depends on the size of the
drive.
