Windows XP platform:

Pathway:
Start
Control Panel
Software Explorers

The following error message appears:

Application failed to initialize:
0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the
service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a
service manually.

I performed the recommended actions. Same result. How do I fix this?

I have the same problem and it just started yesterday (12/31/06) and I can't
fix it either.

I've been getting the same message for the last few days, ever since I
downloaded the last automatic update from Microsoft. You need to send another
update to fix this!

I have been having the same problem with the same results as the others. Is
this just a hoax or is something really wrong? It seems strange when I search
the subject on Windows, I get no results. If some computer expert can advise,
it would be appreciated by this novice. Thank you and Happy New Year.

You are still using the Beta version of Defender.
Download the final released version from Microsoft and install it.
The Beta version expired on Dec. 31st.

Hi.

Do a file search for windowsdefender.msi. It might be present under one of the C:\Windows\Installer\{GUID} folders.
