Windows Defender

This morning on startup I had the following notice:- <Application failed to
materialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop.
To start the service, restart computer or search Help & Support on how to
start service Manually.>
On restarting the computer I had the same Notice. The Windows Defender icon
disappeared from the Task bar and when I click on Open on Windows Defender
in Programmes I get the above Notice again.
How do I restart Windows Defender or find Help & Support for it in these
circumstances?
Should I download it again and if so where will I find it?

I had the same problem this morning; message reads <Application failed to
initialize> etc. but I assume this is just a typo. I'd be interested to hear
the result and have left my e-mail address at the Newsgroup for a response.

I have the answer and solution. The version that we have been using has
expired. Go to the microsoft.com download page and under Windows Defender
you will see the notice that the older version has expired on December 31st.
To add the newer one I uninstalled my old non-working version and then
installed the new one with no problems.

Richard is right. I also downloaded what was presented to me under the title
Windows Defender and reinstalled it. During the reinstallation the old
version was uninstalled, but there is one difference with this version: I
have no icon in the Task Bar, so I do not have any means of knowing whether
it is functioning, although I run a Scan on installation. Many thanks for
the replies.

The Icon is hidden by design
If its not running, or detects something, the icon will be visible or you
will get a msg

Shouldn`t *piggyback* on an old question ; can you get into safe mode
to use your antivirus ?
