I've been sporadically getting the following pop-up when my computer starts:

Windows Defender
Application failed to initialize: 0x80010005

It happened again today after I d/l a Windows update for Windows Defender,
coincidentally.
Anyone have ideas?

Thanks,
Walter

I have the same problem. The error message appears every time I boot up. I'm
looking for help too.

Hello Walter,

Go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com ;

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you have these files.

Windows Defender records, in the System event log, at the time of the scan,
the precise path and filename of each detection.

So--right click My Computer, choose Manage.
Click on the plus sign in front of Event Viewer.
Click on the System events log, in the left column.
Click on View (top menu), filter.
Click the down-arrow at the right of Event Source, and choose "WinDefend."
Click apply, click OK.

Now--in the right window, scroll back to the time of the original detection,
and look for yellow-triangle marked records for those original detections.
Double-click a record in the right window to open it and see the full
detail. You can cut and paste, via a button--back to this thread.

Look for yellow triangle entries that give the precise path and location of
what was detected.

Could you supply some information on what your OS is, firewall, anti-virus,
other RTP programs, WD engine, etc?

I'm using a HP Pavilion dv9000 with Windows Vista Home Premium. Norton 360.
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1505.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2204.0
Definition Version: 1.15.2336.7

Checked for updates. Said there are no available updates.

Here is the first yellow triangle under Windows Defender on my laptop:

Windows Defender Real-Time Protection agent has detected changes. Microsoft
recommends you analyze the software that made these changes for potential
risks. You can use information about how these programs operate to choose
whether to allow them to run or remove them from your computer. Allow
changes only if you trust the program or the software publisher. Windows
Defender can't undo changes that you allow.

I unchecked "Automatically scan my computer" and "Use real-time protection"
in Windows Defender. I no longer get the error message. I'm using Norton for
firewall and Spysweeper for spyware so Defender is probably duplicative
anyway--I'd still be interested in a fix though.

Hi tjebme,

Turn ON "Use real-time protection", and " Automatically scan my computer".

Turn OFF the boxes in Choose if Windows Defender should notify you about:

Now try again, a see if the error message show again.

Hi tjebme,

C:\Windows\system32\Bubbles.scr is a screen saver.

I think you may have to work at excluding it from the scan, as an interim
measure. Tools, Options, scroll down to Advanced options, and fill the box,
by adding the full path and file name to the Tools/Options/ do not scan box,
hit the add button, and Save.

Good luck

I made the changes you suggested in Defender. I've rebooted a couple of times
and the error message is no longer appearing. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks much for your help!

P.S. Given the issues Defender is having with the Vista screensavers, I'm
wondering if that also behind the computer not sleeping if the screensaver is
running....but that would be another thread :)
