windows defender does not start

tried to manually start the services but failed with following error:
could not start the windows defender service service local computer
error 2147942402:the system cannot find the file specified

Make sure Microsoft Client for Windows is installed in networking and
Workstation service is strted. That worked for me.

I have the same problem. W2K SP4 box (not completely patched). RPC and
Workstation are running, but Windows Defender fails to start with this error.

One thing to try would be the remaining critical patches--I've seen some
reports that other failures of service startup may be resolved by that.
