I am having the exact same problem -- "error 0x80040154 class not registered"
when trying to update WD definitions. Otherwise, it seems to be working -
although not sure. I have Windows 2000 SP4, IE6 SP1 running on stand alone
computer

It does not seem to be getting to IE - because I get the same error when I
try "Check for Updates" and am not connected to the internet.

Does anyone know how to manually download the WD definitions -- i.e. bypass
the "Check for Updates" option?

Thanks,

Bill

I got the same error message. Since Windows Defender is integrated into
Windows Update I then went to Windows Update in Internet Explorer. It showed
an update for Windows Defender which installed without issue. Give it a try
and see what happens.

Same problem, resolved by getting the first 2 updates from windows update:
which is Windows Installer 3.1 and Background Intelligent ... Service (BITS),
forget what the 3rd word was.

after that i can update my windows defender.
