I just downloaded/installed the new version over the old one. The installer
successfully uninstalled the older version and definitions. Once the new
version was up and running, I was prompted to check for updated definitions.
When I did, I got an error message, something about not recognizing
something.(I hate to be vague, but I assumed I could find the error message
in the event viewer afterwards, but it was not there.) Despite the error
message, the defnitions automatically updated successfully. I checked the
Event Viewer and there were no errors in any category and Defender is
installed with current definitions, RTP on, and Quick Scan completed. So
far, so good!

hi steve ,

installation of the new version went fine , no problems only one of the old
problems wich is already reported many times remains :

the MsMpeng.ex , the real-time protection of windows defender is trying to
get in my symantec program , antivirus 2006 , with resource protection.

That resource protection is the problem , it keeps a log of programs wich
interact with it or trying to get in the symantec program.

the symantec resource protection says there is ' a non autorised access and
is ending that access atempt.

an example , but it happens maby 10 times in 1 minute .... :

c:\programfiles\windowsdefender\msmpengexe. (pid=700) is trying to access to
c:\programfiles\symantecshared\nmain.exe and many other sub-maps of symantec
shared.

This problem continues....is it harmfull ?

I uninstalled previous version, installed new. Install went OK, but would not
update definitions. (source not found error). Used Windows cleanup utility to
remove the Windows Defender definition updates entry, then used check for
updates from within Windows defender and it updated successfully first time.

Thanks, Steve. I downloaded the new version over the old one on two home
pc's. Everything went great - download, updates, run scan - all worked
properly. NO problems on either pc. Thanks.

to steve ,

no that is not possible , you can only tell wich item not to be scanned by
symantec , this is the other way around : defender is trying to break in to
symantec, and symantec is defending itself against it.
that is something that you can not allow in the symantec program , i have
doublechecked that.
i think the problem isin the defender program or maybe the symantec ?
i have send a log from the symantec resource protector to Thierry Perraut
at microsoft (by mail just 10 min ago) o give it to the defender people ,
maybe you can intercept it also ?

(a symantec program is always very defensive for itselfs )

It seems to work better if you install the new one over the old one, rather
than uninstall first. The installer for the new version automatically removed
the definition file. I received an error message when I clicked update, but
it updated anyway to perfection and I could not find that error message in
the Event Viewer afterwards. Some kind of transient glitch. Bill Sanderson
suggested that it might be cause by Defender checking for updates at the same
time Windows updates is starting up to provide updates - two update processes
at once. I don't know. Interesting!

Why isn't there a prompt within Defender to upgrade to the new version. I
only found out about it after I went to the Calendar of Updates. How is the
general public being informed??? There are going to be repeated problems
reported because folks will still be using the old build, when they don't
know about the new one. Isn't there a better way to notify folks?

I installed the new build over the old one and everything worked perfectly. I
agree with Old Rebel, though, that there should be a better way to inform
people of this new version.

Hi Old Rebel

The logistics for MS is maybe impossible to achieve
if they made a massive inform about a new beta release.

I don´t know how many akamai (probably) servers MS are using
worldwide,
several hundreds probably ??

25 million of users and 15 million of them directly started a
download..... a real Internet peak for a beta release.
Those peaks probaly also costs.......

From Akamais central ;)

http://www.akamai.com/en/html/technology/nocc.html

"Sitting inside Akamai's Network Operations Command Center, the command
room for 18,000 high-speed servers stationed around the globe, (gives)
a God's-eye view of the Internet, monitoring its health in real time."
— Wired, July 2003

So this must be a challenge for MS how to distribute a product.

Maybe a mail which they can send out in "portions" to customers ??

There's a button in the UI that will turn on and link to the install page
for the new version when the time comes.
We're planning to turn it on soon, but like I always say, don't change two
things at one time. :)

Steve,

I successfully installed the refresh over the last version, however, I
cannot get updates. I get, "Windows Defender was unable to complete the
update: 0x8007064c. The installation source for this product is not
available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

I tried this kb, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105, with no avail.
The Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} failed with the same
error, but no hex code. There is no folder in Installer with that GUID which
does (sort of) explain why it fails, but I did find the msi file (a0d920d on
my machine) as the remnants of the install. However, the guid does match the
reg key for uninstall.

The last version ran successfully until the most recent definition update,
which Automatic Updates kept prompting me to install (I think it was 1389.7),
which is why I applied the refresh.

Running XP Pro SP2, non-AD (so no domain issues involved). I'm a developer,
so I have VS2005, SQL2005, multiple SDKs, etc.

Would love to get this working again (for both of our sakes!).

Thanks,
Kevin

I got a similar message for a brief moment and then Defender updated anyway.
I could not find any errors listed in the Event Viewer and everthing seems
fine. I wonder what caused that only transiently on mine and now permanently
on yours?I don't understand all the tech language about the hex etc. I hoe
Steve address this issue. Bill Sanderson suggested that it might occur when
Defender was trying to update at the same time Windows Updates were trying to
download. Keep trying to update. Or perhaps, use this old formula:
Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select the Windows Defender Definition file entry from the list
and click Remove.
Step 2:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

I don't know if that will work with your problem, but it's worth a try.

Hi Bill

Yes, but nothing about Internet peaks.... ;)

Every distribution must be a challenge for MS.

And for sure with a more ready product they can send out update
messages with Windowsupdate and control this massive download
with time zones/serverzones.

Next "peak" will probably be Vista if MS publish a public Beta.

plun

I think Mike Chan answered this one today in another post.

Hi Old Rebel

The logistics for MS is maybe impossible to achieve
if they made a massive inform about a new beta release.

I don´t know how many akamai (probably) servers MS are using worldwide,
several hundreds probably ??

25 million of users and 15 million of them directly started a download.....
a real Internet peak for a beta release.
Those peaks probaly also costs.......

From Akamais central ;)

http://www.akamai.com/en/html/technology/nocc.html

"Sitting inside Akamai's Network Operations Command Center, the command
room for 18,000 high-speed servers stationed around the globe, (gives) a
God's-eye view of the Internet, monitoring its health in real time."
- Wired, July 2003

So this must be a challenge for MS how to distribute a product.

Maybe a mail which they can send out in "portions" to customers ??

plunx

Why isn't there a prompt within Defender to upgrade to the new version. I
only found out about it after I went to the Calendar of Updates. How is
the general public being informed??? There are going to be repeated
problems reported because folks will still be using the old build, when
they don't know about the new one. Isn't there a better way to notify
folks?

hi steve ,

installation of the new version went fine , no problems only one of the
old
problems wich is already reported many times remains :

the MsMpeng.ex , the real-time protection of windows defender is trying
to
get in my symantec program , antivirus 2006 , with resource protection.

That resource protection is the problem , it keeps a log of programs
wich
interact with it or trying to get in the symantec program.

the symantec resource protection says there is ' a non autorised access
and
is ending that access atempt.

an example , but it happens maby 10 times in 1 minute .... :

c:\programfiles\windowsdefender\msmpengexe. (pid=700) is trying to
access to
c:\programfiles\symantecshared\nmain.exe and many other sub-maps of
symantec
shared.

This problem continues....is it harmfull ?

:

I just downloaded/installed the new version over the old one. The
installer
successfully uninstalled the older version and definitions. Once the
new
version was up and running, I was prompted to check for updated
definitions.
When I did, I got an error message, something about not recognizing
something.(I hate to be vague, but I assumed I could find the error
message
in the event viewer afterwards, but it was not there.) Despite the
error
message, the defnitions automatically updated successfully. I checked
the
Event Viewer and there were no errors in any category and Defender is
installed with current definitions, RTP on, and Quick Scan completed.
So
far, so good!
