If anyone else had this problem. I haven't seen it. When I tried to update
my windows or install a product requiring windows validation, I got a message
saying my os could not be validated because it had been activated to many
times. I first noticed this when I tried to get an update to defender
itself. I completely uninstalled defender and the problem went away. I now
have no proble validating my windos xh home edition. Hope this helps if
anyone else has the same problemyl44

Thanks for posting this. I've seen one other post from a user with a
similar issue. My assumption, at the time, was that, in fact, the "too many
times" was correct for his system, and that manual activation would have
been needed.

However, if this is really a bug--either in WGA or in Windows Defender, I
sure would like to get it looked at hard--nothing makes people madder than
having trouble that they should not have with activation or WGA.

Would you be willing to re-try? Reinstall Windows Defender and see if the
same thing comes up again?

If it does, I'd love to get clear documentation of the error message that
you get on attempting to get, say, a Windows Defender signature update.

Oh--one more detail. The WGA control was revised as of March 1st--so it'd
be interesting to know whether your experience predated that, or was since
that change.

Hi Bill

I´m nearly sure that this is a Windowsupdate/WGA mess.

It would be really interresting if a user tried "Dial a fix"

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Started with Softwaredistribution flush and then checked for updates
again. Maybe also Windowsinstaller 3.1 repair and Windowsupdate repair
if a flush doesnt´work.

I'm afraid I'm not computer savvy enough to do that, but I'd be glad to
reinstall and see if it still happens and let you know

Yes it was defender1. I became aware of the problem when I tried to update
to defender2

I installed beta 2 and the validation issue seems to have gone away. But It
says that defender "hasn't been updated for 38 days" when I try to update it
I get the message that the update was unsuccessful. I tried 3 different
times from within beta 2 and also from windows updates with the same results.
I have a yellow shield in my takk bar saying I have updates. When I tell it
to install, it appears to do so and the shield dissapears for a minute then
pops back up.no error message it says the update was successful, till the
next time the shield pops up. The update unsuccessful message comes from
windows updates.

Great--that one is easier to solve than validation issues:

Try the steps in this kb article first, please--this solves it for most
people:

I know that it looks complicated--just do what they say to do--carefully,
and see whether the updates work correctly in the next attempt.

Excellent--I can't guarantee that won't recur, but I'll cross my fingers.
