rCan someone tell me please if you can run Defender with Antivirus software
(eg Norton Internet Security, McAfee etc). Will it stop the software from
working properly? No one has answered my question yet!

Defender is not antiviral software. Not only can you run it with antiviral
software, but you must.

To 'Someone'
Why do Norton tell me not to run Defender then, and why does Norton disable
Defender when I install it????????? Puzzled as to who is right--

When I first got my puter, Norton was installed as a freebie for one year.
After I learned some things, and after my puter would not boot up once, I no
longer use Norton, but AVG, which has a free version. Follow Norton's
advice if you want. That's your business. If you have Vista, Defender is
already installed.

Hi Martin,

I use Trend and it does the same as Norton! ;)
But if I install Defender there where no problems!
The only thing is, double warnings, because Trend has warnings also for
spy ware.
Just try it and see what is happening.

Hi Martin,

I currently run Windows Defender (with real time protection on) along with
ESET's NOD32 for antivirus protection. The combination works extremely well.
If interested you can get additional information directly from their site.

http://www.eset.com/index.php

I had used both Norton and McAfee products in the past and it seems a number
of various problems continually surfaced. NOD32 has eliminated all problems,
the program has a small footprint, is easy to remove if not satisfied,
updates frequently and offers excellent protection. So good I have added the
AV product to all six home PC's.

I do recognize that a number of other AV's products exist and work well but
I think their names are not NORTON or McAfee.

Hi Martin,

The policy of the most AV/AS program makers is that to prevent them from
unwanted problems with the programs on there site, advice to uninstall
programs that does the same thing from the other site.

Norton and Trend both has Anti spyware modules running on real time and
more running on the same time should slow down your PC programs running.

If you need more info let me know.

I wanted to add, I have used both Norton (just the AV program, not the FULL
installation) and also McAffee. I also had System Mechanic. All of them
permitted Windows defender to be installed and to run. However I found that I
do not like Nortons, as viruses slipped by it more than once. I do not like
McAffee because it has so many sub programs running (check it in task
manager) and it slowed my computer down alot.

I have other software to protect my computer from spyware and other tools to
clean up things like cookies and internet browsing cache and such. But I did
want something small to trust, and I use Windows Defender - trustworthy
program offered by Micorosoft. And I am also using AVG free version as my AV
software - it is small and also reliable and doesnt slow me down at all.

There are so many available products, it can be confusing. Alot of these
programs tho, come with so much other stuff bundled into it - it can really
make the computer slow and so then everything I try to do is frustrating with
hangs and slow opening or saving.

I am happy with what I have. Spybot Search and Destroy, Tune up Utilities
2007, Windows Defender and Windows firewall still active - and also AVG free
antivirus program.

Hope this helps!

AVG, both the free and pro, has its own firewall, which, I believe is better
than Window's. At any rate, AVG will shut down the Window's firewall as it
uses its own.

avg free does NOT have a firewall
only the AVG Pro + firewall or the AVG Security Suite Pro

There is a beta for the product, which is called Microsoft Security
Essentials. You could go to http://connect.microsoft.com and see whether
it is still open, but my recollection is that the beta is closed at this
point. It will be publicly available sometime in the next 6 months, I
believe.
