Windows Defender 0x800106ba error

Diana;
If your still running the Beta version of Windows Defender, it's guaranteed
to be non-functional, as it expired the last day of the year 2006. So
basically you have nothing to loose by going to WD Version 1.1.1593.0 ,
although activating it again along with NIS could create conflicts that
have been reported in these newsgroups in the past...

In that event your option may be just to remove Defender. Assuming you
have Norton's version of their Anti-Spyware product you won't be left
unprotected if it comes to that, but I manage to use Defender with NAV2005
with a minimal number of problems by disabling the "protect my product"
option within NIS.

Migrating from Beta to the current version was not meant to require an
un-install first, but since your getting that message you may have to run
the Windows Installation Cleanup utility as mentioned in this thread before
you'll be able to load it.

Hi,
I have been researching this error for two days. I have windows XP media
edition. The error comes up on startup. When I try to upgrade to the
current version or try to remove the beta via the add/remove or the cleanup
utility, it keeps asking for the program CD. When I click on OK, even though
I dont have a program CD it says I must follow the correct path. I click on
browse and try to get it to see the downloaded msi file, doesnt see it. I
even tried the RUN REGSVR32 files that was recommended. Still no joy. Any
ideas?

Thank you,

Stephen

Well, prior to Beta expiring and during the timeframe that we weren't
recommending the Cleanup Utility (due to accidental Ms Office update
corruption), the general recommendation was to try to re-install the Beta
to get back your Beta MSI file so that the Beta could be uninstalled
correctly and then go for an immediate upgrade to the Current Version
without removing the Beta first. Whether or not that will still work is
debatable due to the Beta expiration, but you could give it a try with
Windows Defender Beta 2 (Build 1347) from filehippo and then Windows
Defender 1.1.1593 from the Microsoft download site:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_microsoft_antispyware/
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

I'd download and save both installation files to disk... disconnect from
the net... then turn off your Anti-Virus to do the installations rather
than run in place. Don't forget to enable your AV again afterwards before
you reconnect to the net.

This works for me up until I try windows installer cleanup. Windows Defender
doesn't even show up in there because somehow most of the program got
deleted. I've tried almost everything on this thread. I can't just
re-download it because it says it's included with Vista. I de-fragged today,
I've run McAfee, I've scanned and scanned and the computer can't find the
files. I'm stuck with half a program, which wouldn't be so bad, but I keep
getting that 0x800106ba every time I turn my computer on.

This response indicates the error of reading newsgroup posts related to
another users problem, and generalizing from there.

This solution, using the Windows Installer cleanup tool, is NOT applicable
to Windows Defender running on Vista.

In general, your error message is caused by your antivirus program which has
not properly disabled Windows Defender.

If you do start, run, and type defender in the search box and hit enter, do
you get the Windows Defender window?

If so, go to tools, options, and, using the scroll bar on the right side of
the window, scroll all the way to the bottom of the window and UNCHECK the
box which says "use the program" or something similar.

You can also set the service startup type to disabled in the services
control applet.

If, in fact, Windows Defender has been partially uninstalled in some way on
your system, the fix is to run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.
To get to an elevated command prompt, do start, all programs accessories,
right-click command prompt, and choose "run as administrator."

My problem is that with Vista Home Premium 64 Windows Defender never shows up
to be able to remove - so I thought since I get the error maybe I need to
reinstall and downloaded - well, guess what? it said I didn't need it since a
version already existed on my computer. Any other suggestions?
