Hello,

I have recently downloaded the "COM+ Rollup QXP6 for Microsoft
Windows XP" hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/?id=837119 and
tried to install it on my Windows XP Pro machine. During the
installation a progress bar shows but freezes at 0% and the following
error message pops up on my screen: "Windows could not load the
installer for MEDIA. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance.". I
haven't tried installing other hotfixes from Microsoft so I don't know
wether the problem comes from this particular patch, but I suspect
that the same would happen with other updates as well.

I also tried deleting the %System32%\CatRoot2 folder because I
read in a post that this could solve the problem. Well, it just made
the progress bar move to 2% and the error message appeared again.
Every time I start the installer the %System32%\CatRoot2 folder is
recreated.

It is really vital for me in this moment to install the patch, so
I would greatly appreciate your help.

I have already read through the google newsgroup without finding a
solution to my problem. Here is what I did in order to solve it: I
noticed that the "Sounds and Media" icon in the Control Panel was
corrupted and unable to start the properties dialog. So, no doubt,
this is what causes the error message during the installation process
although I don't understand what is the relation between installing a
hotfix from Microsoft and the "Sounds and Media" in the Control Panel
:)

So I started the installation process of the hotfix again and
ignored the error message (after clicking at least 20 times on the OK
button when the message pops up). I had to wait about 10min until the
progress bar moved from that 1% but discovered with joy that finally
it could reach the end (before I was cancelling the installation after
the first error message thinking that it will prevent me from
installing the hotfix). It is now installed successfully on my
computer and of course solved the issues that it concerns
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=837119).

What do you think might have caused the "Sounds and Media" icon
get corrupted in my Control Panel? Of course the sound is not a major
concern on a server machine, but if there is a way to fix this by
reinstalling something I would appreciate your suggestions.
