Window XP Pro. No matter how I change file types and associations the Windows bitmap viewer logo appears before the file name. It seems like the new association logo used to appear. I don't know how Windows bitmap viewer got installed or how to get rid of it. Any help out there? Thanks.

It is the icon that is wrong. Removing the viewer will have no effect on the problem.
You get to the icon for each file type through the folder options tab in the control panel.
By the way, I have had limited success in changing icons. As I don't pay any attention to icons, I didn't pursue the issue much.

There is no "Advanced" button for .bmp files in that window. That would
be the means to change the icon. I have Irfanview set up to handle
bitmaps and it sets its own icon for image files, but it takes over
associations in a rather unusual way.

Are you trying to change the Associated Application as well as the icon, or just the icon.

If you just want to change the icon, you need to modify the DefaultIcon field in the Registry for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmpfile.

You need to know what Icon from what application you want it to be.
