windows beta error

I am getting the following error: the path C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\MyDocumentsWindowsDefender.msi cannot be found. I am even
getting the same message when I use add and remove programs and try to
uninstall windows defender. I cannot run the update at all. Why is this
happening and can anyone help me. I have posted this same message at least 4
or 5 times in the last week and no takers. Is there anyone out there that can
help me at all!

What happens if you do a new download from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

and save it to the desktop.

Then turn off real-time protection in your antivirus, and double click on
that downloaded file.

This should reinstall Windows Defender.

After that reinstall, please re-enable real-time protection in your
antivirus application.

At this point, if you wish to uninstall Windows Defender--go to start,
control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, and choose remove.

tried it, it will not work. I went to control panel, add and remove programs.
Tried to uninstall defender, get the same error message as before. It will
not let me remove defender! I also get the following: The feature you are
trying to use is on a network resource that is unvailable. All users on my
home computer have admin authority, no restrictions. I followed all your
instructions to the letter and still the same results and same error message
as first posted.

Can you give the full story? You downloaded from the link I posted, and
installed, correct?

Did that install apparently go just fine?

I went to the link, saved to desktop, exited defender, shut down antivirus,
and closed ie. I then clicked on icon, and started to install, about 3/4 of
the way through the install a screen popped up with the following: the
feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the
installation package "........ .mxi". then there is a browse button, inside
the box it reads C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\. I click on ok then the
previous error message I sent to you appears and thats all the further I get.
It goes to finish unable to install try again. It happens the same way
everytime. I go to control panel, add and remove programs, and go to windows
defender, I click on remove, then I get the same error message as in the
first post, it refuses to remove defender. I had another program I wanted to
remove so I tried it, the program was removed with no problem. There it is
step by step, same results every time.

thanks

Thanks--that's clear. I believe I understand the issue, but let me think a
bit about how to proceed.

any idea when the problem I am having with windows defender is going to be
solved. or when someone is going to help me fix the problem???

I am having exactly the same problem, and have tried everything. I am curious
to see what they come up with.

I have been having this same problem and it seems to be looking for the the
original WindowsDefender.msi installation program. I deleted that after
successfully installing the last version. The only WindowsDefender.msi file I
have now is the one I downloaded for the latest version. Anybody have a fix
for this yet?

I discovered the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. It apparently wipes out
the installer and registry informaton and allows a fresh install of whatever
it is cleaning up. It is designed to get around the error 1612 message that
was showing up in my logs.

I used it and I was able to successfully reinstall Windows Defender without
it looking for the old install package. good luck!

Get it at:

I'm glad that worked for you.

However, beware--it has some side effects--If you use a version of Microsoft
Office which is covered by Office Update, you should check whether you are
able to update via that mechanism still.

What did you remove with that utility? I am still trying to repro this
issue.

I removed windows defender. I could not (would not let me) use control panel
to remove defender. If you look at my first couple of replys I put in the
exact error I was getting. It did mess with my office 2003 update
capabilities though. I will just reinstall office 2003 to fix the problem.
There was something about my .msi file, it could not be found. If you can
figure out why I could not remove it using add and remove programs I would
like to know why. I have never had a problem like that before.

Thanks
Dale
