windows defender error 0x800106ba vista

I have a new compaq presario running windows vista. The pc came with Norton
Internet Security. After uninstalling Norton my windows Defender stopped
working and started giving me the error code

windows defender error 0x800106ba vista

I stopped it from starting with windows but when I click on the program
itself I get the same error code. I can go into the system and manually start
it with no problems. When I look at the list of software thats installed as
if to remove it, the program is not listed. Anyone now How I can fix this. I
have tried to download it from the website but get a box telling me that
defender comes with windows vista and that there is no need for me to
download it.

Thanks in advance

Hello RenesAngel,

If you have a retail, as opposed to OEM

Simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service
to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files
with which it finds a problem.

I hope this post is helpful.

Please, let us know how it works ºut.

Thank you Engel for responding. The version of Vista came installed on the
PC. I dont even have a disc for it. I have disabled Defender at startup and
can start it up when I want to turn it on. I have McAfee Security Center on
my pc. I think it will give me enough protection. I would however like to
have Defender working correct. Do you have any suggestions on how I might
fix it.

Hi RenesAngel,

I am assuming you unistall Norton, with they Removal Tool
This link is to Symantec's Norton Removal Tool:
<http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

Run it at least two times, each time reboot after it has finished, before
you attempt to install your new anti-virus (McAfee Security Center ). Even
Symantec's own tool struggles to rid a computer of all Norton residue.

I would suggest staying on the side of caution...
Contact HP and ask order fot the OEM disks

Reinstall, and this time use the Norton Removal Tool.

I'm sure you'll get more detailed help from the guys who know a lot more
than me, but I hope this is enough to get you on the right road for nºw.

You should check McAfee's recommendations for your version of their
products--Security Center doesn't tell me whether you have both antivirus
and antispyware coverage from them. If you do, you might see whether they
recommend disabling Windows Defender--they may well do so.

The 2009 McAfee Norton, etc for Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows
Defender to improve system performance.

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \msconfig),

or enable Windows Defender (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and then
turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender).

The instructions are incomplete.

Go to start, all programs, accessories.

RIGHT-click "command prompt" and choose "run as administrator"

Then follow the previous instructions to run the SFC /scannow command.

I get error: application failed to initialize... A problem caused this
program's service to stop. Restarting computer doesn't help.
Bill Sanderson's method didn't help, still can't restore Windows Defender.
All other suggestions here did not work, (run: sfc/scannow & services.msc)
get same error.
I have Dell laptop w/ Vista Home Basic preinstalled. Also McAfee.
any new suggestions?

McAfee is the cause of the issue--please consult with their support forums.
I believe they have a KB article on this issue.

I uninstalled McAfee and the error 0x800106ba cleared.
I now use AVG AntiVirus FreeDownload.
It's worked great on my on my other PC for years.
Thanks, Bill !... Chris Mangano

You're welcome. I suspect that McAfee scores better than AVG on independent
comparative tests, but AVG isn't bad. I think others I know like Alwil's
free product somewhat better.

Microsoft will have the best free product of all when it becomes available,
which should be later this year.
