Windows Backup Utility

Laura

I have Windows XP Home Edition which came with my
computer. I need the Backup Utility (ntbackup.msi),
which wasn't installed with the Home Edition. I got
instructions from Microsoft on how to install it. When I
followed the instructions exactly, just before the wizard
was finished, I got this message: "A network error
occurred while attempting to read from the file:
D:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP[1].msi". I tried this several
times, but got this message each time. I can't find an e-
mail address for Microsoft and I'm frustrated. Can you
possibly help me? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Is it possible that the file is corrupted in some way? I take it that the
D:\ drive is your CD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD-ROM drive and this file is on disk
you either burned or purchased from Microsoft? Can you download the file
from the Microsoft website and try installing that copy just in case the one
you are trying to use is bad? If you still can't get the file to load the
Microsoft Windows XP Backup Utility have you thought about just burning your
data to a CD? Or using a Zip Drive? The Microsoft Windows XP (or any other
version) Backup Utility is pretty crappy in the first place, so think about
using another method to archive the critical data on your system.

Laura,
Good afternoon,
In reading this, you are apparently trying to load this file from a CD.
As far as I know, the correct file name is "NTBACKUP.msi" NOT
"NTBACKUP.msi[1] as you show it and that just may be the problem. Rather
than fool with the CD, just download the file from Bob Cerelli's site. I
did and it works. Go here:
