I'm about to move a Windows 98SE machine to Windows XP
Pro, and wanted to know how I could completely uninstall
Windows 98 and format the hard drive before installing
XP. Can I simply boot from CD and enter the XP setup to
format the partition? Or is there another way to do
this? Thank you for any suggestions.

Starting off fresh with a formatted HD and new partition is the best way to
go. The XP CD has this capability if you boot with it.

Back up your disk to CD or another hard disk (of
course!). Be sure you have the original installation CD's
of any software you have installed - Office, virus
scanner, etc., since you must reinstall them, not just
restore from backup.

The WindowsXP CD offers the option to remove and recreate
the existing disk partitions and reformat them. That's
much simpler than trying to blank your disk first.
