Installing Windows 2000 Professional after Windows XP

M

Mr Ed

I purchased a Dell with Windows XP Home pre-installed, and added a second
hard drive on which I have Linux and NetBSD installed. I have a Windows
2000 Professional CD that I would like to use to install 2000 Pro on a
spare partition of the second hard drive of this computer.

I currently use Grub as a boot loader.

Before I try this, I was wondering if the Windows 2000 installation would
somehow interfere with the XP boot process. I don't mind if Win2k trashes
my MBR, since I'll just reinstall Grub afterwards, but don't want to
interfere with XP's functioning in anyway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to repair the MBR from Windows XP by issuing "fixmbr"
and possible "fixboot" in the recovery console, followed by a repair
of the GRUB boot loader.

The Windows 2000 boot loader is not compatible with Windows XP

Take a look at these two articles.
