Blind MBR bootloader

I tried installing Linux on some spare disk space - but I could no longer
boot Windows because GRUB did not find Windows. I used the recovery console
to deinstall Linux and rewrite the MBR with the Windows bootloader but when I
try to run Windows, the machine says hal.dll is missing (Windows speak for
hard drive missing).

I have FreeDOS installed under the first partition which is 130-odd mB.
Windows is installed under a logical partition. There is another FAT16
partition used for transfer between the two OSes.

Any ideas?
