Best to ask in a Windows 7 Community Forum.

According to MS website:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Also a notable one for me was an addtional 1 GB RAM and addtional 15 GB
Harddrive space for XP mode.

That may be nothing for some of ya but for me YOUCH! can't do it on my
computer and I really can't afford a new one so its a bit of a bummer.

It also might help to have a DVD drive since typical install is done this
way.

It's important to note that Microsoft minimum requirements are what's
needed to run what they are talking about at all, not to run it with
adequate performance. Personally, I would recommend at least 2GB of
RAM.

Also a 20GB hard drive is ridiculously small these days; you can't
even buy a new drive that small anymore. I would recommend at least
100GB.

Why not read the system requirements listed at Microsoft's Windows 7
overview web page, or run their advisor utility.

And your question has what to do with Windows XP, the focus of *this*
newsgroup? The Microsoft community for Windows 7 is found at:

Does anyone know what are the minimum requirements for a new pc with
Windows 7?

Not many people can't afford this machine that is commonly found on the
used market.
$20 DDR-2 800mhz ram is $10 a gig. You need 2 sticks.
$40 Motherboard (dual core compatible) with 4 x DDR-2 800mhz ram slots
(will max out at 8gb), with or without video, eSata or Firewire.
$40 Dual core CPU which you can easily overclock to over 3ghz. Stock
speed around 1.8 - 2.2ghz.
$30 200gb Sata 7200rpm hard drive.
$15 DVD burner, older IDE's are definitely this cheap and work fine.
$20 Video card if your motherboard doesn't have one built in, PCI
Express, 128mb, very basic.
$20 Case and power supply.
$100 22" LCD monitor (1680 x 1050) or $50 for a 17" (1280 x 1024) or $70
for a 19" (1280 x 1024)
____
$285 or $185 with your existing monitor. Later upgrade the hard drive to
a 10k rpm model, bigger monitor, ram to 8gb, and a better video card.
