Hello,

I have a dell poweredge server, we had a slight power outage today,
while I was out to lunch, and the battery backup was depleted and
windows shut down, I am unable to start windows in normal mode,
however it starts fine in safe mode. I get the log in screen on
normall boot, however once I log in, it freezes either when displaying
the desktop / while loading the desktop.

The safe mode seems to be working fine.

System Log notable entries:

(At time of safe mode login)
Windows Cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on w/the
default profile for the system.

Application Log notable entries:

(right after power restoration and normal bootup)
Event 1202
Source SceCli
Security policies are popegated w/error 0x4b8: An extended error has
occured.

(At time of crash)
Event 1000
Source Userenv
Windows couldnot save the registry settings in your user profile on
its 1st try because another program or service was edditing them,
windows tried again and saved them after 10 attempts.

I really want to avoid reformatting and restoring a week old back up.

Sounds like the profile is/was corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can
rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs
on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You
can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the
folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you
need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Don't overwrite ntuser.dat

In the case of the local administrator profile follow the steps here to
replace the corrupt profile.

I was not able to delete the profile, I don't have the correct access.

I am unable to fully log on to windows with any of the accounts
created, even lower level accounts that I just created for testing
purposes.

Any help would be truly appreciated!

Ok, I managed to log into the Server using Debugging Mode, all other
methods failed in allowing me to delete the Registery.

The issue was originally with Local Admin, since I hadn't tried
anything else. After creating and trying to log in with several other
types, I came to the realization that it wasn't working. So I deleted
the registery key for the Admin user.

Now it takes a long time for the computer to log on....

On the loading your personal settings it takes about 10 minutes, for
the last 15 minutes I've been waiting to see if I'm going to get a
desktop at all, nothing has shown up yet.

Thanks for any help

You'll need to get in touch with someone that has administrative access to
the server.

Check the event log for errors. Try running Task Manager|File|New Task
%systemroot%\system32\eventvwr.msc
