Laptop freezes on startup

Im working on my friends laptop with 2000 Pro. he was
doing the windows updates and was instructed to restart
as normal. upon restart the laptop freezes during the
main title page. safe mode takes about 3 minutes to load
up. this comp was fine untill the updates. do i have to
remove some of these updates?

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.
